How do you calibrate a laptop monitor

I saw someone at my friends house calibrate a 1080p lcd screen but I didn’t understand what they were doing they were manually doing some kind of adjustments with color. how do you calibrate any lcd monitor in general? can you learn how to calibrate lcd screens in general or is every monitor brand completely different for calibrating? In other words can I learn to do this for any tv screen (or at least a little help of doing so for any screen) or do I have to tell you more info about my monitor in order to know how to do it? anyone who knows anything about calibrating screens, please help.

You need to have special equipment to do it properly (since proper calibration requires accurate measurement of what colours are being displayed).
